With the sun finally out and summer just around the corner, now is the perfect time to explore some of the great outdoor swimming spots of East Sussex.

From Victorian-era lidos to wild river swimming pools and world-famous beaches, read on to discover five of the best.

1. Saltdean Lido

Housed in a Grade II-listed building, Saltdean Lido is an exemplary piece of 1930s British modernist architecture. First opened in 1938, it was designed as part of a programme to bring accessible leisure to the British seaside.

The Lido has a crescent-shaped 40-metre outdoor heated pool and a grassy sunbathing area, perfect for relaxing on warm days. There’s also a smaller splash pool for younger swimmers.

The Lido also regularly hosts pop-up saunas, yoga sessions, live music events, and seasonal activities. It caters to serious swimmers, families, and people with disabilities, and there are private hire options.

The Lido also has an on-site bar, café, and restaurant serving seasonal dishes.

You can find the Saltdean Lido at The Oval Park, Saltdean Park Road, Saltdean.

2. Pells Pool

Pells Pool in Lewes is the oldest freshwater outdoor public swimming pool still in operation in the UK.

First opened in 1860, the pool is fed by natural spring water drawn from the chalk aquifer beneath the site. At 50 yards long and 25 yards wide, it has space for both leisurely swimmers and those looking to get in some serious lengths, and there is a smaller paddling pool that’s perfect for children.

There is also a kiosk serving refreshments, and occasional pop-up facilities such as a sauna that can be booked in advance.

Pells Pool has a relaxed, community-focused atmosphere, and you’re even welcome to bring your own food and drink, making it an ideal spot for a picnic after a refreshing swim.

You can find Pells Pool at Brook Street, Lewes.

3. Barcombe Mills, River Ouse

In the village of Barcombe Mills, just outside Lewes, the River Ouse offers one of Sussex’s most scenic wild swimming spots.

This stretch of river runs for around five kilometres, providing fresh, deep water that’s ideal for a relaxing dip or a more adventurous swim.

The surrounding area has walking trails, cycling routes, and opportunities for boating. The heart of the swimming area is centred near the Anchor Inn, a riverside pub that also hires out rowing boats.

If you’re looking for a more secluded place to swim, head north beyond Other Elsie’s Bridge, where you’ll find quieter spots.

You can find swimming spots along the River Ouse by walking down Anchor Lane, Lewes.

4. Brighton Beach

Brighton Beach is one of the most iconic and well-loved seaside destinations in the UK. As well as offering a mix of traditional and modern coastal culture, it’s also a fantastic place for sea swimming.

The water is easily accessible, and during the warmer months, the beach is popular among open-water swimmers. Even in the cooler seasons, you’ll spot brave cold-water swimmers taking the plunge, and it’s especially busy on Christmas Day.

There are lifeguarded zones in the warmer months and there’s often a community of sea swimmers who meet around sunrise and sunset. While tides and conditions can vary, Brighton Beach generally provides a safe and enjoyable environment for coastal swimming, though it’s a good idea to check tide times and sea conditions before heading in.

After your swim, you can take a stroll along the promenade or explore the famous Victorian Pier, which still features a traditional fairground, arcade games, and fresh doughnuts.

5. Sea Lanes

If sea swimming isn’t for you, Sea Lanes in Brighton offers a great alternative right on the beachfront.

Sea Lanes is a 50-metre, six-lane outdoor pool, heated to a consistent 19 degrees all year round. The pool is designed with open-water swimmers in mind, offering a safe space to build confidence, improve technique, and enjoy the experience of swimming outdoors without the unpredictability of the sea.

Sea Lanes serves as a gateway into sea swimming, while also being a training space for competitive swimmers, triathletes, and fitness enthusiasts.

So, whether you’re easing into outdoor swimming or simply prefer the idea of swimming without waves, Sea Lanes is a great alternative that still has the salty air and coastal views of the ocean.

You can find Sea Lanes at 300 Madeira Drive, Brighton.
