5 delightful local markets to visit in Lewes this autumn

Local markets can bring a real sense of community and inspiration to an area, and here in Lewes we’re fortunate to have an array of regular markets to explore.

From antiques to fresh local produce, there’s something for everyone. Read on to find out about five local markets you could visit in Lewes.

1. Lewes Friday Food Market

Every Friday, the food market takes place between 9 am and 1 pm at the market tower in Lewes. The market features an array of sweet and savoury food, drink, and store cupboard essentials from independent small businesses in the area. Some of the businesses you’ll find at the market include:

  • Bluebell Farm
  • Cheese Please
  • Flint Owl Bakery
  • Krishna Indian Food
  • Greenways Fruit Farm
  • Jaju Beans and Leaves
  • The Pudding Company.

First established in 2010, the Friday Food Market is run by the Lewes Local Community Interest Company (CIC). The CIC is a not-for-profit company that aims to develop sustainable local food systems so that they can make it easier for more people to buy good, healthy, seasonal food.

2. Lewes Craft Market

On the second Saturday of each month, the craft market takes over Lewes market tower, featuring stalls offering a range of locally crafted treasures.

The craft market is a fantastic place to meet local artists and makers; each of their crafts is unique and inspiring. Ceramics, prints, 3d printing, jewellery, and textiles are just some of the disciplines that make a regular appearance at the monthly market.

Sometimes, the market will focus on a specific discipline, such as print or jewellery, and sometimes it will focus on gifting-specific events.

3. Lewes Farmers market

This year, the Lewes farmers market celebrates its 25th anniversary. When it began in 1998, the farmers market was one of just two farmers markets in England. Over the course of its 25 years, the market has continued to offer local produce that protects the environment, has minimal food miles and packaging, and boasts high standards of animal welfare.

The produce you’ll find on sale includes:

  • Eggs
  • Fruit
  • Honey
  • Cheese
  • Vegetables
  • Herbal teas
  • Perennial plants
  • Chutneys and jams
  • Luxury baked goods
  • Cakes and puddings.

You’ll find the market in the Friars Walk Car Park between 9 am and 1 pm on the first and third Saturdays of the month.

4. Lewes Flea Market

The flea market in Lewes is a fantastic place to visit any day of the week, whether you’re looking for something specific or simply want to have a look through some of the vintage and retro items on offer.

As well as genuine antiques, you could find:

  • Art
  • Ceramics
  • Furniture
  • Accessories
  • Collectibles
  • Homewares
  • Vintage clothing.

Pop along to the methodist church on Market Street in Lewes to find the market, which is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm. Its sister market is located in Brighton and is also open daily.

5. Lewes Town Hall market

After a brief hiatus, the town hall market has now reopened. The friendly stallholders here sell a wide range of items, including jewellery, vintage clothing, homewares, books, and more. There is also an RNLI stall raising funds for the lifeboats and a tombola to raise funds for the Bonfire Society, both historically important groups here in Lewes.

As well as browsing the stalls, you can also enjoy some refreshments, including tea and coffee and homemade cakes.

You’ll find the market at Lewes Town Hall on Fisher Street every Tuesday from 8 am until 1 pm.
