5 must-visit art galleries in Sussex

World Art Day is celebrated on 15 April and is the perfect opportunity to explore some of the rich artistic heritage right on our doorstep.

Read on to discover five must-visit art galleries in Sussex.

1. Worthing Museum and Art Gallery

Worthing Museum and Art Gallery brings together art, history, and design into one building.

The museum has a range of collections, including fine art, local archaeology, and social history, and displays artefacts from the Bronze Age through to the Saxon period, offering an insight into Worthing’s heritage.

The galleries have works by famous artists, such as Walter Sickert and Stanhope Forbes, alongside more contemporary pieces, including sculpture and photography.

One of its standout features is its costume collection, which is one of the largest in the UK. The collection spans from the 17th century to the present day and includes pieces belonging to Queen Victoria and designs from Coco Chanel.

In addition to its permanent collections, the gallery regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, and there is always something new to explore.

You can find Worthing Museum and Art Gallery on Chapel Road, Worthing.

2. Pallant House Gallery, Chichester

Pallant House Gallery is highly regarded for its modern British art collection and holds over 5,000 works spanning from 1900 to the present day.

The gallery is set within a Grade I listed townhouse from the early 18th century, with a contemporary extension.

Its collection features world-famous British artists, including Barbara Hepworth, Damien Hirst, Graham Sutherland, Paul Nash, Lucian Freud, Eduardo Paolozzi, and Rachel Whiteread.

There are also temporary exhibitions displaying works by both established names and contemporary artists, and there is a model art gallery with miniature works.

You can find Pallant House Gallery at 9 North Pallant, Chichester.

3. Charleston, Lewes

Charleston was once a meeting point for some of the 20th century’s most radical artists, writers, and thinkers, and is the former home of artists Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant.

It served as a country meeting point for the famous Bloomsbury Group, which included the likes of Virginia Woolf, and Charleston is where they often came together to create, debate, and imagine how art and society could be different in the future

The space remains a place of experimental thinking and now hosts a range of exhibitions, events, and festivals.

The house and studio have largely been kept the same and offer an insight into the lives and works of its former owners and residents. Alongside this, the newer gallery spaces display works from the Bloomsbury Group as well as modern artists.

Charleston also features stunning gardens set within the South Downs, which are a beautiful setting to explore.

You can find Charleston on Southover Road, Lewes.

4. Fabrica, Brighton

Fabrica is a contemporary art gallery within a restored church and is known for its immersive and large-scale exhibitions.

Fabrica typically hosts three major exhibitions each year, featuring both emerging and established artists.

The gallery also places a strong emphasis on community engagement and offers workshops and creative learning opportunities for a wide range of ages and abilities.

The space itself adds to the appeal, with its large, atmospheric interior being the perfect backdrop for visitors to experience the works.

You can find Fabrica at 40 Duke Street, Brighton.
